Why It Matters
Why Kaukauna Homeowners Get Inspection Notices
Under state law, each Wisconsin county keeps an inventory of the private septic systems inside its borders and runs a maintenance program for them (Wis. Stat. 145.20). In Outagamie County, the Development & Land Services Department administers sanitary systems (Outagamie County Land Use, Zoning, and Sanitary). A notice in your mailbox means the county has your system down as due for its three-year inspection (Wisconsin DSPS). What that inspection asks of you, and what it doesn't, is set out in our guide to the three-year rule.
The program covers conventional in-ground systems, mounds, at-grade systems and holding tanks. Only properties on public sewer, or buildings without plumbing, fall outside it. Much of Kaukauna itself is on city sewer, so the notices mainly reach properties on the city's rural edges and in the surrounding towns.

Local Rules
Who Reports the Inspection
You don't have to mail anything after Kaukauna septic inspections. State code lets the owner's agent file the report, due within 30 days of the work (SPS 383.55). When we finish, we file it with the county and give you a copy of our findings. Keep it with your house records; if you ever sell, the buyer's side will likely want to see it.
Pumping
Septic Pumping in Kaukauna
An inspection doesn't always end in a pump-out, but many Kaukauna owners book both in one trip. If the tank measures one-third full, we pump it on the spot; if it doesn't, you can still choose Kaukauna septic pumping at the same visit and save a second call-out later. Homes on city sewer are in the Heart of the Valley district's service area (Village of Combined Locks) and have no tank to pump. The tanks we pump are on the rural edges and in the small Calumet County part of the city, where the report goes to Calumet instead. Our septic tank pumping page explains what happens once the lid is off.
Owner Tips
How to Get Ready for the Inspection
- Find the tank lids, or tell us if you don't know where they are.
- Clear snow, vehicles or stored items from over the tank and mound.
- Have your county notice or parcel number ready.
- Note anything unusual: slow drains, odours, an alarm that's sounded recently.

Local Context
Kaukauna on Both Banks of the Fox
The Fox River divides Kaukauna into a North Side and a South Side, but for septic paperwork the county line matters more than the river. Most of the city is in Outagamie County, and a small part extends into Calumet County (Wikipedia: Kaukauna). On the Outagamie side, a new or replacement system starts with a sanitary permit that a licensed plumbing contractor submits through the county's CityView portal (Outagamie County Land Use, Zoning, and Sanitary). On the Calumet side, Kaukauna septic inspections are recorded in Calumet's online Ascent system, where owners can check their last service date before we arrive (Calumet County Sanitation).

Inspections in Neighbouring Communities
We run the same inspection along the river in Little Chute and Kimberly, and for rural lots in the Town of Buchanan just south of the city. Upriver, our Appleton septic services page covers properties in all three counties Appleton touches.
For details on the inspection itself, see POWTS inspections.
FAQ
Kaukauna Septic Inspections FAQ
I didn't get a notice. Do I still need an inspection?
Yes. The county's three-year clock keeps running even if the letter went to an old address or never came. If you're unsure when your system was last serviced, Outagamie County Development & Land Services can tell you.
My home is on the Calumet County side. Who gets the report?
Calumet County, not Outagamie. That small corner of the city reports to Calumet, whose pumping and maintenance records sit in its online Ascent system (Calumet County Sanitation). We file with whichever county your parcel is in.
Who is qualified to inspect?
A licensed master or journeyman plumber, a certified POWTS inspector, a registered POWTS maintainer or a certified septage servicing operator. We're licensed in Wisconsin for POWTS pumping, inspection and service.
What if the inspection finds a problem?
We show you what we found and explain the repair. Small fixes, such as a new baffle or filter, are usually quick jobs.
What happens if I ignore the county notice?
The county chases up systems that miss the deadline (Wisconsin DSPS), and an unanswered notice doesn't go away on its own. Booking before the date on your notice saves all of that.
